How do PDO threads work?

Polydioxanone (PDO) threads are a type of suture made from a biodegradable polyester that slowly dissolves over time. They’re placed within facial tissues to create a lifting and tightening effect.

Some PDO threads are smooth, while other types have tiny barbs to better attach to tissue. Other options involve intertwined threads to add additional volume. Once placed, PDO threads temporarily lift skin in that area of your face. The presence of the threads prompts your body to create new collagen, which creates a lasting plumping effect.

While nothing can match the effects of a surgical face-lift, PDO threads offer the chance to achieve subtle lifting and tightening effects with a minimally invasive procedure. Compared to the risks and recovery time, not to mention the expense of a surgical face-lift, PDO threads are a more easily attainable aesthetic solution.

What should I expect during a PDO threads procedure?

When you arrive for your procedure, your practitioner cleanses and disinfects your skin before injecting a local anesthetic into the treatment area.

Once you’re numb, your practitioner uses a needle to create a small opening in your skin. They then guide a thin piece of medical tubing called a cannula into the area. The PDO threads are within the cannula, and once the tubing is withdrawn, the threads remain in place, with any excess thread material trimmed as needed.

You’ll experience some bruising and swelling over the next few days, but you can resume normal activities right away. It’s important to avoid placing any pressure on your face for a week or two, and you should avoid drinking through a straw, pursing your lips, or vigorous exercise for a couple of weeks.

How long can I expect the results of PDO threads to last?

In general, thread lift results can last anywhere from 1-4 years. Younger patients tend to experience more lasting results because their skin is more elastic, and their facial tissue is usually fuller than people in middle age or beyond.
