How is Botox formulated?

Botox is formulated from a neurotoxin called Clostridium botulinum, a naturally occurring substance that's dangerous in certain concentrations. The process of creating Botox uses a minute volume of this substance and is perfectly safe.

When injected into muscle fibers, Botox prevents those muscles from going through their normal range of motion. Facial muscles in the treatment area can still move enough to create normal facial expressions, but they won’t be able to tug and pull your skin into lines, folds, and wrinkles.

Botox is the most commonly used aesthetic injectable throughout the world. It’s been the subject of a multitude of clinical trials and studies and is deemed safe for both medical and aesthetic applications.

There are a number of other injectables that also rely on neurotoxin formulations to deliver anti-aging results. These include Xeomin®, Dysport®, Jeuveau®, and Daxxify®. Each of these options is designed for specific uses, and your practitioner will explain which injectables best meet your needs.

What are some treatment areas that respond well to Botox injections?

Botox is FDA-approved for temporarily reducing the appearance of horizontal forehead lines, crow’s feet at the sides of the eyes, and frown lines, which are the vertical furrows that develop between the brows.

Botox is often used off-label to reduce the visible signs of aging in other areas. The masseter muscles are a good example. When injected into the muscles that support jaw motion, Botox can help create a more streamlined facial profile. Botox is also used around the lip line to create a “lip flip” that creates a fuller pout without using dermal fillers.

How long do Botox results last?

It only takes a few moments to get Botox injections, and you can return to the rest of your day immediately after your treatment. Your results will develop slowly over the next day or two. You can expect those results to last around four months, at which point you’ll begin to notice your lines and wrinkles gradually returning.

You can decide if you like your results and come in for another round of injections, or if there are things you’d like to change, just let your practitioner know, and they can adjust your treatment next time around.
